Who is still smoking in Canada?

In a May 9th CBC News article entitled “Who is still smoking in Canada?”, smoking rates and trends in smoking across Canada are discussed by several experts. Robin Cunningham, senior policy analyst at the Canadian Cancer Society, mentions a study where 23 per cent of 18- to 24-year-olds had smoked water pipes in the previous year.

Living in Montreal, I have several friends who go out to hookah bars and so I asked them to comment on this topic.

“I go to hookah bars because it’s a cultural experience”, said one of my friends who does not smoke cigarettes.  He asked me if it was less dangerous than smoking cigarettes, so we looked at the Mayo Clinic website, where Dr. Richard D. Hurt, M.D., definitively states that “hookah smoking is not safer than cigarette smoking”.  To read Dr. Hunt’s complete response the same question that my friend asked, visit http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hookah/AN01265.

What are your thoughts about hookah/shisha?  Have you ever been to a hookah bar?
